Jayhawks, Highway Patrol
Following the climax of the story of Dagda Sargeant Flanaghan is retired, Steele is promoted to Lieutenant and decorated by the Mayor publicly. Privately Steele is an awkward embarrassment the Mayor wants rid of. Dan Knight has a solution for the Mayor put him out on the Turnpike to deal with the new menace, the motorcar! King City's Highway Patrol is born to a fanfare of press pictures with their new Model A Ford. Sargeant Monaghan, with his son rides "Shotgun" for him joins Steele. Officers Reilly and Sloane go with Steele. The Chiefs department orders Steele to the City Limits, youcan do what you want but not in anyone elses Precinct, Dan Knight has other ideas.
The new State Turnpike runs East, rising up to Carburry Hill, the Summit marking the City Limits, it's a long pull upfrom Vice Alley. A car parked up there has a great view of traffic coming their way, its a spot that sees some reckless driving from frustrated drivers and a daily fender bender. There's a pull in at the top where a wrecking truck and a food van sit. Steele and Knight get a Police phone installed. Over the hill is Queens County under the jurisdition of the County Sheriff, notorious for moonshiners, wild ranchers and backwoods Honkytonks.
Parked at the Stop, Sargeant Flanaghan,Shotgun, Slone and Reilly see a suspicious pick up truck driving wildly up Carburry Hill. Flanaghan sees the Driver is a Wanted Man, Curly Whiteshirt cop killer. The Jayhawks give chase pulling the truck over quickly. Curley and his two goons fight it out, Sloane flanks the truck covered by Reilly, Monaghan and "Shotgun". A bystander Callie Connery helps the police by firing at the goons actually wounding Curley. Knock out all three of the gunmen with her baton, laying out Curley after jumping into the pick up bed and cracking his skull from behind.
